Planning Backpacking Food

When backpacking for more than one day or night you need to pack lightweight, high protein, high nutrition and ready to eat foods.  You do not want low calorie foods because you need the calories to keep you going.  What you pack depends on your own personal taste buds.  Here is an example of what you need to pack for one day, then multiply it by the number of days you are backpacking.

Breakfast: Mountain House Scrambled Eggs & Bacon

Snack A: Trail Mix - Nuts, dried fruit, chocolate

Lunch: Mountain House Chicken & Rice

Snack B: Peanut Butter & Crackers

Dinner: Mountain House Home-style Turkey Dinner

Night Snack: Hot Tea or Hot Cocoa & Candy bar

There are many brands of backpacking foods.  Some of the most popular are Mountain House (available at Walmart, REI & Amazon), Backpackers Pantry (available at Walmart & REI) Patagonia Provisions (organic), Greenbelly (gluten free).

It is also important to pack your food in a bear canister (available at REI and Amazon among other places).  Pack a water purification system, it is very important to stay hydrated (available at Lifestraw,  REI and Amazon.)
